Man-made materials secure the case

High-tech doesn't stop at the lugs in many of the latest timepieces. New materials are wrapping wrists at the high end, under water and in the boardroom. Kevlar, modified rubber, resins and carbon fiber are just a few items now forming bracelets and even serving as the faces of watches in all price ranges.

New Khaki quartz chronograph features satin stainless steel case and bracelet that integrates synthetic black material complementing the dial. Suggested retail range, $395-$450.

After a year of research, Patek Philippe introduces a strap and face made of a black composite of 20 materials. Hypoallergenic and highly resistant to stress and sunlight, the material is integral to this new steel Aquanaut, which updates the Nautilus series. Hands and numerals are white gold. Suggested retail, $6,500 for the automatic pictured, $4,500 for quartz models.

The "Pure Design" version of Rado's Ceramica is sold in three sizes, each featuring a scratch-resistant, high-tech ceramic case and bracelet. Suggested retail $1,390.
