Look for experience to protect you

by John J. Kennedy, president, Jewelers' Security Alliance

There has been an upsurge in violence against those who carry jewelry on the road. Armed gangs from South America have attacked traveling jewelry salespeople, personnel in trunk and remount shows, retailers moving goods between stores and/or repair shops and trade show travelers.

In response to this threat, more and more jewelers are using armed escorts to accompany them in risky circumstances. The best armed escorts are off-duty police officers with experience and training in crime prevention specifically dealing with jewelry.

Quality armed escorts can cost $25-$50 per hour. Costs depend on the difficulty and danger of the job, the amount of time involved and whether it is a long-term contractual relationship.

Here are a few select security companies with significant jewelry industry clients. These companies use off-duty police personnel with a track record of providing quality service. As a matter of policy, JSA does not endorse any company.
