This Year: Luxury Movement

High-end brands promise to take off

High-end brands are on the move in the U.S. If you've not carried luxury watches recently, this year may offer a rare opportunity to join the relatively small number of retailers who do. Brands with plans to reassess their retail bases include IWC, Breguet, Porsche Design, Daniel Roth, Bertolucci, Chronoswiss and Vacheron Constantin.

The growing interest in the U.S. market is due partly to the growing number of luxury steel models with relatively lower prices, says Paul White of Reis-Nichols Jewelers, Indianapolis, IN. In addition, the U.S. economy compares very favorably with those of Japan and other countries in the Far East where many luxury brands traditionally have sold very well.

However, luxury brands require special handling. Think about your store's image and your long-term business plan, advises Ronald Jackson, president of Girard-Perregaux U.S. A luxury brand needs a retail partner whose sales and image goals closely mesh.
