Summer Time

Watch introductions this year make strong statements

Glamour, gold and distinct design combine in many of the watch introductions for 1998.

Links to the past are important also, seen particularly in watches with tank, oval and other non-round cases.

Women also have more choices, thanks to diamond and color accents and smaller sizes. And men can expect to see more tank and tonneau models as the year progresses.

The Off-Road from Xemex Swiss Watch is made in solid stainless steel and features automatic ETA movement, sapphire crystal and screwed attachment with leather strap or steel bracelet. Retail, $695; with quartz movement, $495.

Delma's Midland II is inspired by the original Midland, which debuted 70 years ago. In stainless steel or two-tone gold, the Swiss-made watch features a sapphire crystal and several dial colors. Suggested retail, $295 for steel, $375 for two-tone.
