Movement Imports Move on Up

Watch movements with 17 or more jewels were imported to the U.S. at an extremely high rate in 1996, an astonishing increase of 2,284%. These movements are used primarily in mechanical and automatic watches.

The import figures (the most recent available) likely reflect the use of more synthetic rubies in the new, less-expensive automatic movements now on the market. It also supports what retailers have reported for the past three years - more consumers are interested in automatic watches.
