SPOTLIGHT ON JAPANESE WATCH IMPORTS

Watch imports from Japan represented 28% of total U.S. imports in 1996, up from 26% in 1995.

The key product, to no retailer's surprise, was the quartz analog watch made of steel or other non-precious metal. These accounted for 45% of the total volume of quartz analog watch imports.

However, Japan's production of digital watches appears to be dropping as watch companies manufacture and ship digitals from China and other areas of Southeast Asia.
