DESIGNERS LEAD THE WAY IN WATCH SALES WHILE INDEPENDENTS HAVE HIGHEST
Independent jewelers reported the highest profitability (based on gross
return on inventory) of any retail category for watches in 1996, based on
the Jewelers of America "1997 Cost of Doing Business Survey."
The fact they also reported the lowest sales growth could indicate untapped
potential. The JA survey measures performance in three areas - profitability,
productivity and financial management - and provides the most complete and
up-to-date comparative financial information available to retail jewelers.
