Diamonds:News De Beers' Laser Inscription
This is De Beers' design concept for a new "reader" that will detect laser inscriptions on diamonds (see "The Smallest of Signatures," p. 17, Professional Jeweler,April 1998.) De Beers will start to inscribe its name and identification numbers on diamonds to research the impact of branding on consumer confidence. The new machine will be the only way to see the inscription, which is too minuscule even for a jeweler's loupe.
