Beyond the Pale

White's not always right when it comes to pearls

Designers and manufacturers have pushed past the classic white pearl strand. Peacock, pistachio, golden, silver, gray and black pearls add contemporary snap to a formerly conservative sector.

Color is a matter of the wearer's preference. But when selling colored pearls, the general rule is darker or olive skin tones look best with golden or cream pearls, while pale complexions are flattered by rosy hues.

The many colors of pearls can be considered a celebration of cultural – and sometimes cultured – diversity.
