U.S. Is Now (Officially) Top Swiss Watch Market

The latest timepiece statistics confirm what industry has suspected all year

In the first six months of this year, the United States bought more Swiss watches by dollar volume than any other country, surpassing Hong Kong for the first time. Sales to the U.S. jumped nearly 20%, helping to balance a steep drop in demand from the financially ailing Far East.

Sales here and in Italy, France and Spain also helped reverse a two-year decrease in sales of assembled Swiss watches (by dollar volume).

Swiss exports of all types of complete watches rose by 4.6% in volume and value between January and June, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. Swiss manufacturers ex-ported 15.6 million watches, 700,000 more than in the same half of 1997.

The chief engine of this growth was a phenomenal 36.1% increase in exports of steel timepieces.

Total Swiss watchmaking exports, including parts and clocks, rose 4.5%.
