Six years of effort on the part of the Platinum Guild International
USA Jewelry Ltd. have yielded spectacular results in the growth of platinum
jewelry sales. They've increased 700% since PGI opened its U.S. jewelry
office. (PGI also has offices in Italy, Germany, Japan, China and England,
as well as a platinum investment office in New York City.)
Laurie Hudson, president of PGI-USA, and James Courage, chief executive
of PGI Worldwide, shared the figures at the bottom of this column during
a presentation titled "Platinum Planet" at the JCK International
Jewelry Show this summer.
In the U.S. alone, 10,000 retailers now stock platinum jewelry. At the
same time, the number of U.S. jewelry manufacturers working with platinum
has grown 75%. PGI attributes this growth to promotional campaigns featuring
platinum fans ranging from everyday consumers to celebrities such as ice
skating star Kristi Yamaguchi and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi not
to mention the appeal of the noble metal's hue, heft and history.
