Lacy details and intricate design set off the beauty of diamonds

Filigree, a type of decora- tion made of fine wire, is often crafted in gold or silver to form delicate, intricate designs to show off diamonds. This delicate, handmade jewelry is a dramatic departure from the broad, bold lines and large, flat surfaces of contemporary design, creating a lacy counterpoint to the solidity of diamonds. "People are fascinated by small details and intricate designs," says Mark Silverstein, exclusive distributor of Varna Platinum, Woodland Hills, CA.

The popularity of estate jewelry and open metalwork primes consumers for filigree. "This area of design has not yet been fully explored, and because filigree is handmade, the number of people who can do this work is limited," says Margaret De Young of Ernest Slotar Inc., Chicago, IL.

The tiny details in this jewelry are best seen at eye level. Consider displaying a piece of filigree jewelry suspended behind a magnifying glass and inviting customers to appreciate its detail. Display filigree rings on a black background to draw attention to them. Also be aware of lighting to bring out detail in the metalwork and the diamonds.
