Flow of Traffic
About 80% to 90% of customers automatically turn to the right at about
a 45° angle when entering a store, says Joseph Weishar, president of
New Vision Studios of New York City, a well-known expert in store fixturing
and merchandising. This is because humans receive factual information with
the left side of the brain and act on it using the right side of the brain,
which controls the right side of the face and makes us more right- than
left-oriented. With this in mind, many stores situate their new and high-margin
merchandise to the right of the entrance at a gradual angle, creating a
path with furniture that encourages customers to walk that direction.
