Preholiday Price Watch

Gold prices fell below $260 per ounce as summer began, mainly because of oversupply. It's not good news for miners, but low commodity prices could help lower the wholesale cost of gold jewelry just in time for holiday sales.

Platinum took a dip in March and April vs. the same months of 1998 but then returned to prices in the usual range. That recovery is evidence of platinum's staying power and inherent value.

Silver prices are following a mostly lower path than last year, though at midyear seemed poised to gain strength. This is a price to watch as more designers begin to offer high-style silver jewelry.
