Family Jewels

Help customers celebrate special events and relationships

As early as the 17th century, people commemorated the special bond of family with jewelry. Then – and again in Victorian times – that jewelry often featured a braid or lock of a loved one's hair. Today, family jewelry more often bears the image of a mother and child or birthstones honoring children and grandchildren.

The family bond that underlies this jewelry makes it an emotional purchase. "This jewelry commemorates special events and relationships," says Ronna Lugosch, a designer/goldsmith in Round Pond, ME.

Family jewelry isn't limited to new mothers and their babies. Husbands buy it for wives, children buy it for their mothers, grandparents buy it for themselves. "This is a product that essentially sells itself because people immediately identify with it," says Brian Fleming, vice president of sales and marketing at Carla Corp., East Providence, RI.

This jewelry tends to be reasonably priced to appeal to a wide range of consumers, which means it won't be a financial burden to stock it. And it lends itself to colorful displays with baby shoes or children's toys as props.

Remember to advertise family jewelry regularly – not just for Mother's Day – because family events occur throughout the year.
