Check out gemstone educational and promotional opportunities

Before, during and after stocking up on gemstones and jewelry at the Tucson shows, take advantage of the educational and marketing services offered by several industry trade groups.

AGTA
The American Gem Trade Association will present 30 free seminars during its GemFair (Feb. 3-8 in the Tucson Convention Center), including "Profitable Buys in Tucson," "Drawing From Custom Design Jewelry" and "Disclosing Gemstone Treatments." The Gemological Institute of America and American Gem Society offer seminars and courses in Tucson starting Jan. 29. AGTA also issues a free source directory listing 650+ U.S. gem dealers and other support services, as well as the annually updated Gemstone Enhancement Manualand other materials. CPIC
The Cultured Pearl Information Center will soon launch a Web site at www.pearlinfo.com and, in February, will offer an on-line training course called "Online Pearl University." Graduates will receive a certificate from CPIC and the Japan Pearl Exporters Association. CPIC also offers free ad slicks, lends stock photography and provides charts along with promotional goodies available for purchase. Call CPIC at (212) 688-5580.

JA
Jewelers of America offers resources about gemstone enhancements (free for members, fee for non-members). They are: JA Guide to the FTC Guidelines(first copy free to members), showcase disclosure signs, AGTA's Gemstone Enhancement Manualand brochures for consumers. JA has updated its consumer brochure series What You Should Know About ...,on gemstones and cultured pearls. JA also offers copies of Common Questions About Gemstone Enhancements and Treatments(seen on its Web site www.jewelers.org). In addition, JA hosts gem and pearl seminars at trade shows in New York City and through affiliate state organizations. Call JA at (800) 223-0673 or (212) 768-8777.
