Off With Her Head

One retailer's unusual catalog images call attention to the season's dramatic look

Retailers who produce their own advertisements and catalogs may want to note Saks Fifth Avenue's artistic approach to fashion photography in its Fall 1998 catalog.

When looking at a photograph of a person, readers tend to let their eyes drift right away to the subject's gaze. This winter's textured clothing and ornate jewelry were already enough eye candy for one catalog page. So Saks neatly sliced off the top half of its models' heads, letting shoppers' eyes wander instead to the brightest spot at the top center of the page – the jewelry.

The striking images bring the products to life while the unusual cropping focuses attention on them.
