Sentimental Journey

Lockets contain precious memories to be cherished for a lifetime

The locket was inspired by the hinged reliquary, a receptacle for the display of religious relics worn as a pendant during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. During the Victorian era, lockets became a popular repository for a loved one's photograph or lock of hair.

Lockets are still in demand as a place to show off pictures of kids and grandkids. Could family values have made them any more politically correct? Regardless, lockets hold the key to the wearer's heart and are jewels handed down from generation to generation. "People buy lockets because they'll be appreciated and worn a long time," says Nancy Nagamatsu, sales director for Friedrich Zettl, Hollywood, FL.

Adds Robert Manse, director of sales and marketing for Royal Chain, New York City, "Sentimental value and the importance of family keep sales and demand strong."

When displaying lockets, keep some open so customers don't mistake them for plain pendants. And be sure to include a photo of a person or pet in an open locket so customers visualize how they will use it. The photos also give you something with which to strike up a conversation with customers. And don't forget add-ons. Suggest a 24- or 30-in. chain so your customer can wear the locket close to her heart.
