The 20th Anniversary Antique & Period Jewelry
& Gemstone Conference will be held July 21-27 at Rhode Island
College, Providence, RI. Plans call for tailored courses and hands-on seminars
designed to enhance participants' knowledge of antique and period jewelry
as well as the conference's "Jump Start" program (July 21-23)
for the beginner and novice. Among the 20+ faculty members are antique jewelry
expert David Callaghan of London and author C. Jeanenne Bell. Representing
the increasing jewelry-oriented presence in major museums will be curator
Ulysses Grant Dietz of the Newark Museum, Yvonne Markowitz of the Boston
Museum of Fine Art and Joanne Lyman of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York City. Gemologist Antoinette Matlins and jewelry historian Christie
Romero will introduce the basics of gemstone identification skills. A dealers
night will give participants a chance to buy and sell jewelry from other
participants and to a select group of members of the Charitable Rhode Island

The Gemological Institute of America, Carlsbad,
CA, has introduced its Graduate Diamonds Diploma program in China in association
with the National Gemstone Testing Center in Beijing. The program includes
two distance education courses diamonds and diamond grading and
the completion of GIA's diamond grading extension class. National Gemstone

Jewelers of America and Stuller
Settings are jointly offering the 1999 JA Bench Jewelers Certification
Scholarship Program. The scholarship covers 50% of the cost of obtaining
professional certification through the BJC program. It's available to bench
jewelers who are JA members or work for JA members in Alabama, Arkansas,
Maine, Oregon and Pennsylvania. Candidates must enroll by July 30 and pay
their portion of the fees at registration. All certification requirements
must be completed by Oct. 1. The BJC program sets standards for evaluating
talent, ability and proficiency as well as professional knowledge and traditional
bench skills. To be certified, the candidate much demonstrate proficiency

The American Gem Society's Jewelers Education Foundation,
Las Vegas, NV, has named Lynn Diamond, executive director of the Diamond
Promotion Service, to its board of governors. Diamond was formerly editor
in chief and associate publisher of National Jeweler magazine. She
has received the American Defense League's Torch of Liberty Award and the
ORT Community Achievement Award.
