Precious Metals:New Products
You've come a long way, baby
Silver, once Thought of mainly as tableware, is a come-from-behind winner
in affordable jewelry. Mid-19th century England gave silver its first substantial
boost into the jewelry world. Since then, silver has often found itself
on the leading edge of jewelry design, primarily because it's the most affordable
of the precious metals, therefore, the one with which designers are most
willing to take risks.
"Sterling silver jewelry is available from a few dollars to thousands
of dollars and is made to suit conservative to fashion-forward tastes,"
says Elvy Tambunan, manager of Balinesia, New York City.
But if you want to sell it, clean it! Silver should look white and shiny
not brown and dingy. Take a moment to remove fingerprints and tarnish before
allowing a customer to try it on.
Display each piece as though it were a work of art rather than bunching
them together in the middle of a showcase. However, you might want to group
an individual designer's works for impact.
Diana Sheil, spokeswoman for the Silver Information Center, New York
City, offers these sterling tips on what's hot for spring:
- Modern-looking chain with oval or amoeba-shaped flat, open links.
- Chokers or long chains.
- Midsize to large pendants on long cords or chains.
- Silver mixed with leather and wood.
- Lightly hammered finishes.
- Silver embracing "icy" pastel gemstones such as moonstone
and blue topaz.
- Bumble bees.
- Silver mixed with 18k gold.
And a hint for fall: watch out for silver pins.
