In Your Ear

A classic daytime look with evening sparkle

So many women lead such busy lives that something as simple as switching earrings as day turns to night can become an added hassle. To help, manufacturers make earrings that can be worn all day and all night without sacrificing comfort or style.

Reversible earrings that are sleek and shiny on one side have pavé diamonds on the other. Short, comfortable hoops fit against the earlobe and can be worn for hours. Understated and flexible style is current, turning diamond earrings and earring jackets into staples.

The use of smaller diamonds in pavé settings makes diamond earrings more affordable. "Pavé is the most significant for us," says Eddie LeVian, designer/CEO of LeVian, New York City. "Bead and invisible settings run a close second."

To sell earrings that flatter your customer, you must be familiar with face shapes and their complements. A triangular face needs something to soften its angles, so suggest a circular or oval earring. Hoops will best complement an oval face. If your customer has a long thin face, suggest a square earring to be visually pleasing.

When displaying earrings, show them face up so your customers can get a good view as they look down into the showcase, suggests Patricia Daunis, designer/president of Daunis, Portland, ME. It's also a good idea not to line up earrings like soldiers –it gets too confusing and boring. Instead, you can group them by three or fewer pairs to allow some breathing room in the showcase.
