Platinum Hits the Table

Manufacturers report sales increase in decorated items

Consumers are clamoring for tableware trimmed in platinum, reports Platinum Guild International, Newport Beach, CA.

Lenox Brands, for example, says platinum-banded china in classic patterns such as Federal Platinum and Citation are now among its best-sellers. Ralph Lauren Home Collection's Academy Platinum china pattern is the best selling in its line.

The Moser Co., an eastern European producer of fine stemware and hollowware, recently introduced matte platinum-finished glassware in the U.S. The platinum border is etched and hand-burnished after firing, resulting in matte and glossy surfaces.

Even venerable Waterford has gotten into the act, with the introduction of Crosshaven Platinum, a traditional lead crystal pattern featuring a wide floral platinum band.

The Moser Co., a Czech Republic glassworks known for creating Queen Elizabeth's wedding pattern, is reintroducing that pattern – called Splendid – for distribution in the U.S. Splendid features an etched and burnished platinum band. The pattern was first introduced in 1910.
