Patriotic Pearls

Winning designs incorporate pearls from North and South America

Designers explored the diverse possibilities of American natural and cultured pearls in Vision '99, a jewelry design competition sponsored by American Pearl Co., Nashville, TN.

The company honored 12 entrants for their originality and technical skill. Winners were divided into two categories: the Discovery Division and the Inspiration Division. Judges were John Nels Hatleberg of Big Gems, New York City; Stacey King of Professional Jeweler, Philadelphia, PA; Gerald Manning of Manning & Associates, New York City; Amber Michelle, a diamond industry journalist in New York City; and Gary Roskin of JCK magazine, Radnor, PA.

Grand Prize: Leigh Wulle, Excelsior Design, St. Louis, MO

"Waterlily," a brooch with an American cultured Domé Pearl® and American natural pearls set in 14k yellow, pink, green and white gold.

Second Prize: Arkady Khasin, Designs in Jewelry, Louisville, KY

"Fantasailing," a brooch with an American cultured Domé Pearl® and 0.23 carat of diamonds set in 14k yellow and white gold.

Third Prize: Stephan Ninich and Chris DeCapri, Capri Jewelers Glen Allen, VA

"Paresseux Jour" (Lazy Day), a brooch featuring a natural-color golden American cultured coin pearl and keshi pearls set in 14k gold.

"Dragon Fly," a brooch featuring an American natural wing pearl and 0.20 carat of diamonds in 18k white gold.

"Oceana," a brooch featuring an American cultured cabochon pearl set with 0.55 carat of pink spinels in 22k and 18k gold.

Third Prize (tie): Glen J. Engelbrecht,
G.J. Designs, Sarasota, FL

"Phantom Phrog," a brooch with an American cultured teardrop pearl and a drusy quartz carving set in 18k green gold.

Third Prize (tie): Taft Justice Jewelers,
Springfield, MO

"A Gift to the Queen," earrings with American cultured cabochon pearls, 0.36 carat of white diamonds and 0.25 carat of enhanced purple diamonds, all set in 18k green gold.
