Swiss Sales to U.S. Grow

Global sales flatten

Though Swiss watch sales to the U.S. grew 6.8% in the first five months of 1999, the value of Swiss timepiece exports worldwide fell 1% from the same period of 1998. Slower sales to certain European countries and lower karat and plated gold sales are to blame.

In addition to the growing number of steel watches sold, the value of the average steel watch rose 14% in early 1999. Note the jump in sales of platinum and silver watches, indicating white metals remain popular.
