In combination, gold and sterling silver create jewelry with casual chic

The icy brightness of sterling silver, the warm glow of yellow gold – put them together and you get a versatile look that goes anywhere. Sterling dresses down gold, while gold raises sterling’s pedigree. “Silver with 18k gold accents is a definite trend,” says Susan Lum-Creitz, sales manager for Ed Levin Jewelry, Cambridge, NY. It’s also more affordable than all gold.

Rings dominate the gold-sterling arena, with bands featuring diamond or colored gemstone accents most in demand. In addition, hinged hoop and other small earrings with a matte finish and colored gem accents are popular. Also selling well in this category are pendants and necklaces that come to the nape of the neck or have open links.

Most sterling jewelry now on the market can tarnish (see Professional Jeweler, July 2000, p. 65, for information on a new tarnish-resistant sterling alloy). Be sure to teach customers how to keep sterling shining like new. Advise them to use a soft brush on pitted surfaces or a silver cloth on smooth surfaces. "Because heat and moist air causes silver to tarnish, suggest the jewelry be stored in airtight bags when not worn,” says Karen Lautanen, president of Zebra Designs Inc., Pittsburgh, PA.

Showcase sterling/gold jewelry on architectural or geometric displays. Frosted acrylic ring pyramids that fasten a weighted wire to each ring allow customers to experience a ring without it walking away.
