Paving with Diamonds

This setting style defines the flowing lines of intricate patterns

No style of setting creates a shimmering expanse of gems quite the way pavé does. Pavé, French for "pave," was introduced in the 18th century and its charm endures. In diamond jewelry, it's most popular today in platinum or white gold.

Pavé requires highly experienced and patient diamond setters. Each small diamond must be laid out correctly before starting. The setter uses sharp hardened-steel gravers to raise minute beads from the surrounding metal to hold each diamond. One slip can ruin the piece.

"This method of setting hasn't changed over hundreds of years, and the tools are essentially the same today," says Peter Shakes, owner/designer of Peter Shakes Jeweller Ltd., Windham, NH. But the style looks as fresh today as it must have when introduced three centuries ago.
