Wild Whimsy

Amusing and individualistic designs cater to special customers and occasions

Jewelry with a comical quality will always appeal to a younger crowd, though high-quality designs and rare jewels will draw upscale, older and individualistic customers. “A self-assured woman wanting to make a statement and be noticed will buy this unusual jewelry,” says Mark Schneider, owner/designer of Schneider Design Studio, Long Beach, CA.

“A whimsical piece will remind the buyer of a loved one because of its character,” says Remmy Rotenier, a designer at Kabana, Albuquerque, NM. This jewelry also sells well in certain geographic areas, making unusual souvenirs for travelers. “Themes indigenous to an area, such as exotic flowers of the islands, will remind customers where they’ve been,” says Rotenier.

Nature motifs never go out of style or demand. “People yearn to be with nature because it makes them feel good,” says Schneider. Rotenier adds, “Insects were important in Art Nouveau, then completely disappeared in Art Deco. Yet at the end of the 20th century, they were back more romantically than ever.” Flowers also seem to fade in and out through time and fashion.

This is wearable art, so get your female customers to try it on in the store. If your customer is a man, have a saleswoman try it on to show how it might look on his girlfriend or wife.
