Gems & Pearls: Designers Rule

Cultured pearl sales grew in almost every retail category in 1998, according to the 1999 Jewelers of America® "Cost of Doing Business Survey," and colored gem jewelry lagged behind, with half of the eight categories reporting a decrease.

Designers, artists and custom jewelers reported extraordinarily high increases in both categories, indicating consumers are particularly interested in colored gems and pearls in high design or otherwise unique jewelry.
