Timely Fact: The Grandfather Clock

The grandfather clock got its name from an American song called "Grandfather's Clock," written by Henry Clay Work in 1876. One of the verses reads "My Grandfather's clock was too tall for the shelf, so it stood 90 years on the floor."

The term grandfather subsequently became a popular name for what until then had been called a tall-case clock or long-case clock.
