Steel Drives Swiss Exports

Record figures echo demand. Prices also rise

Swiss watch exports to the United States increased 22.3% in dollar value during the first half of 2000, according to statistics from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. However, the number of exports of completed watches fell about 3%, reflecting the higher value of the steel watches now comprising much of the demand here and abroad. In fact, steel watches accounted for 80% of the total export growth by value.

U.S. retailers continue to report healthy sales of steel watches, though white, yellow and rose gold watches are selling well also.
