Adorning Ears

Classic, casual or downright funky, there are no more restraints on the style and size of diamond earrings

Ahhh, discretionary income. It seems everyone has it these days, and diamond earrings top the shopping lists of the spenders who love jewelry. In a word, diamond earrings are big.

“There’s a real trend toward bigger diamonds,” says Jane Taylor, owner/designer of Jane Taylor Inc., South Hadley, MA. But big doesn’t mean flash at the expense of quality. “If someone’s going to buy a 5-ct. diamond, it has to show quality,” says David Levine, president of William Levine Fine Jewels, Chicago, IL. “Big and cheap are no longer a consideration.”

What should you consider for your inventory? Experts contacted for this story suggest a 50/50 split between on-ear and hanging earrings. “Everything from simple studs to chandelier earrings is selling,” says Taylor.

Rounds remain the most popular, but square cuts appeal to more sophisticated shoppers, as do ovals and hearts. As for size, diamonds for earrings range from 0.5 to 4 carats total weight and are often set in variations of the bezel or classic basket setting in 18k high-polished gold.

In marketing, don’t forget men who wear a single earring and the women who buy for them.

Also, dare to be creative with displays. Hang a pair of diamond earrings from a crystal tumbler or antique wine glasses. And because these earrings are relatively small, this is one time when showing more merchandise won’t clutter displays.
