AJDC Design Project 2000

The most creative minds in the U.S. designer jewelry community contemplate water as a design inspiration and theme

Water has been a universal symbol for poets through the centuries. Now various members of the American Jewelry Design Council have demonstrated that jewelry artists find inspiration in water as well. In their sixth official Design Project, members of the council were asked to consider water as a theme, and the jewelry artworks pictured here are the result. All poetry quotations have been added by Professional Jeweler.

The purpose of the Design Project, AJDC states, “is to both stimulate interest in new design and to rekindle the creative impulses of the artists, which so easily drown in the pressure of business.” The artists, most of whom run commercial businesses, are freed from having to consider manufacturing their creations, which further liberates their creativity. Other Design Project themes have included the Mona Lisa, the cube, the wheel, the key and the puzzle. The various collections have been exhibited at trade shows, museums and auction houses throughout America.

Ring and Earrings

Rise above this liquid abyss
My love who dons the split toupee
For I am not your nemesis;

Embrace me now antithesis
Whose shade or tone I can’t condemn.
Inhale my breath sans prejudice;
You, me, us, them.

So dredge the sea in search of bliss
Though eye-to-eye cannot convey,
Toe-to-toe upon precipice;

And clutch me now without remiss
Upon my pearled lips belay,
For this is not a final kiss:
