Brooching Diamonds

Suits are back and brooches are the perfect accent

The fashion winds are shifting to suits, jackets and coats for fall, so be prepared as customers look for new accessories after several seasons of less formal businesswear. “It’s the best opportunity the brooch has ever had,” says Geri Bondanza, vice president of Michael Bondanza Inc., New York City.

Vintage and reproduction Art Deco clips, bar pins and whimsical pavé bugs and other creatures are sure bets. But also stock more contemporary designs for women who want to make a “younger” statement. “Today, all shapes of stones are used to create wonderful looking brooches,” says Marie Somos, vice president of Somos Creations, Valley Cottage, NY.

Customers typically have questions about wearing brooches. Here are some tips to pass along:

  • Wear brooches on heavier fabrics, worsted wool, for example. Silk and loose knits can pull or droop with a heavy brooch.
  • If the pin of a brooch leaves a hole, use the same hole each time to prevent further damage.
  • To make a brooch stay in place, weave the pin in and out of the fabric several times rather than stick it through just once.
  • If your customer just bought a jacket made of silk or other delicate fabric and doesn’t want to poke a hole in it, suggest a magnet system, with one part attached to the brooch and the other used behind the fabric (available through Stuller Settings, Lafayette, LA, (800) 877-7777, and Magnapin Inc., Dallas, TX, (877) 624-6274,
