Hip Hoops

The key words this season are large, hollow and shiny

Entertainers are going wild for hoops, so can consumer demand be far behind? Bold hoops have shown up on the ears of such stars as Bette Midler, Faith Hill and Julia Roberts at recent televised events. “People love them because they are so graceful and easy to wear,” says Toby Pomeroy, designer at Eclipse, Corvallis, OR.

The hottest hoops are round or oval. And weight and price issues keep hollow hoops at the forefront of sales. “Buying a piece of fine jewelry for under $100 is very attractive to customers,” says Brian Fleming, vice president of marketing and treasurer at Carla Corp., East Providence, RI. Just remind your customers to be careful with hollow earrings, which are fragile and prone to denting.

And while a high-polish finish is most popular, hammered, matte and sandblasted finishes offer a more refined look and have their proponents also.

In other words, a good selection of size, shape, finish and metal is important. On the sales floor, get this product in the customers’ hands. It’s fun jewelry, so let them play with it.

Trend in the making: Squares. Following in the footsteps of the square diamond craze, consumers are looking for anything geometric, including hoops.
