Green Party

Two distinct shades and gemstones

This quintessential color of nature varies from olive to glass. In colored gemstones, the classic, most-sought-after greens are dark and limpid – as seen in tourmaline – or vibrant and clear – as in peridot. Here’s a closer look at these two gemstones.

Peridot’s history can be traced back more than 3,500 years to Egypt, where it was featured in royal jewelry. Today, much of the peridot used in fine jewelry comes from Myanmar, Pakistan and, closer to home, Arizona.

Peridot is a gem variety of the mineral olivine, a complex silicate of magnesium and iron formed as rocks. According to The Guide, published by Gemworld International, Northbrook, IL, fine-quality peridot from 5-10 carats is $90-$130 per carat wholesale and is readily available in most sizes and shapes. Peridot is the birthstone for August and the gem suggested for 16th wedding anniversary gifts.

Tourmaline, meanwhile, is mined in Brazil, Afghanistan, South Africa, eastern Africa and, to some extent, the U.S. It’s available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, and is often cabochon-cut. The Guide says tourmaline is $100-$165 per-carat wholesale in the 3-10-ct. range. Tourmaline shares birthstone status with opal for October.
