2001 – the true new millennium – begins now

Out with the old, in with the new, as the saying goes. Here’s a selection of the latest in timepiece styling, new technology and even the update of a classic.

Look for these and other new timepieces at the Basel Show March 22-29 and at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie March 27-April 3, both in Switzerland.

Jean Marcel’s Grand Complication 2000 chronograph features a steel and 18k case, day/date functions, moonphase indicator and 24-hour time. The decorated automatic movement is visible through the case back. Suggested retail, $2,595.

TAG Heuer relaunched the Heuer Monza chronograph, based on a 1930s model made for the famed Italian Formula One auto race. The watch features a cushion-shaped case, automatic movement and brown or black crocodile strap. Suggested retail, $2,600.

Damiani’s L’Altro Ego is a larger and sportier version of its Ego watch. It’s available as a chronograph in various dial and strap colors and with a quartz or automatic movement. A steel bracelet is optional.

Breitling has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Communications Commission to sell its Emergency watch in the U.S. Developed at NATO’s request and available in Europe since 1995, the watch transmits a distress signal to be used only by a downed pilot. Search aircraft can pick up the signal 100 miles away. Available to pilots only, it’s made in titanium (pictured, $3,500 suggested retail) or in several gold versions.

Belair’s new stainless steel pocket watch is sold in a mahogany gift box that includes a matching pocket knife and watch chain. It’s made in the U.S. from Swiss parts and is available for private labeling. Triple keystone, $187.50.

The new Xemex gold collection includes this Avenue Atlas chronometer chronograph in 18k rose gold. The full collection comprises eight dial treatments in 18k rose or yellow gold with an alligator strap or custom-ordered gold bracelet. Suggested retail starts at $6,950.
