Tahitian and South Sea cultured pearls show their colors

The focus on colorful jewelry has extended to Tahitian and South Sea cultured pearls in the past year, largely thanks to producers’ promotional efforts and consumers’ interest in more colorful accessories.

Tahitian

The cognoscenti among black Tahitian cultured pearl enthusiasts once sought out those with peacock green overtones. But discriminating consumers are growing more interested in other hues also. “They want to explore the color palette of Tahitian pearls and are asking directly for specific colors,” says Jennifer Jiunta, owner/president of Jennifer Jiunta Fine Jewelry, Atlanta, GA. The overtones to stock this year: purple, navy, aqua, silver gray and pistachio, as well as the traditional peacock green.

South Sea

White remains the most popular color for South Sea cultured pearls among U.S. consumers, but golden pearls are drawing more attention, especially among more sophisticated buyers. “However, they are still quite expensive, and people don’t quite know what to do with them,” says Ronna Lugosch, designer/owner of Lugosch Designs, Round Pond, ME.

Jewelry Styles

Strands are the most popular pearl jewelry style, even though the price of a strand of top-quality Tahitian and South Sea cultured pearls can reach into the stratosphere.

Also popular, and less expensive, is a solitaire pearl on a fine platinum chain. “This elegant and versatile style can be worn with jeans or a strappy dress and still make a statement,” says Jiunta. Also look for creative use of these pearls in brooches and earrings.

Trend on the horizon: more pearls with yellow gold. “Yellow gold adds a richer, warmer, more feminine look that blends and enhances the dreamy luster of pearls,” says Lugosch.
