Hot Pink

Pink gemstones are fashionable and in generous supply

Fashion trends and gem supplies are IN the pink – and not in a shy way. Customers want vibrantly hot hues. Here are the top-selling pink gems this season:

  • Pink Sapphire – Supplies are readily available and wholesale prices range from $200-$2,000 per carat. The African island of Madagascar produces lightly heated pink sapphires in intense and uniform hues.
  • Pink Tourmaline – Nigeria supplies plentiful, good-quality gems ranging from $80-$150 per carat wholesale. Pink tourmaline, or rubellite, is available in pink, red, purplish red, orangy red or brownish red.
  • Spinel – The reopening of a mine in Russia’s Pamir mountains has increased supply of spinel ranging from 2-10 carats. Because of widespread use of synthetic spinel as an imitation for other gems, many customers don’t even know there’s a natural version. Spinel offers a deep, rich red that rivals fine ruby and is hard, tough and suitable for daily wear.
  • Morganite – Discovered in Mad-agascar in 1911, this transparent gem has been hailed as an alternative to kunzite and pink tourmaline. Madagascar’s morganite deposits declined and Brazil became the gem’s top producer. Morganite is a variety of beryl, which makes it a relative of emerald and aquamarine. Tones range from rose pink to lilac. Morganite is a good choice for a customer to wear in the evening because it gleams in low light.
