Contemporary Irish Design

And now for something completely different

Contemporary design in Ireland received a big boost when the Crafts Council of Ireland recently sponsored a contemporary gold jewelry design collection. “Contemporary Irish design still looks Irish, but not traditionally so,” says Leslie Reed, chief executive of the council.

The council sponsored its first New Product awards at Showcase Ireland to spur Irish designers to keep the design innovations coming. “Good design is good business,” says Dr. Frances Ruane, chairperson. The designers featured here represent just a few of Ireland’s innovators.

The Cat & the Moon

This collection-driven company is based in a romantic part of western Ireland where renowned Irish poet W.B. Yeats drew inspiration. The Cat & the Moon’s collections evoke the natural landscape, such as its Wave collection shown here.

Nora Watson

Nora Watson’s work is inspired by the rocky shoreline and swirling waters of her Northern Ireland homeland.

J&Z Blackman

This company offers contemporary lines in yellow and white gold and platinum along with unusually shaped diamonds.

Céline Traynor

The Loop collection features flourishes reminiscent of Elizabethan scripts and scrolls, yet the design is highly modern. Traynor won a New Product award at Showcase Ireland for another collection of open work chain called the Double MW collection.
