Professional Bench/The Path to Proficiency
Stone setting technology saves time, increases quality
Have you ever wanted to speed up your stone-setting procedures and maintain or improve craftsmanship in the process? Using the Foredom® AllSet, invented by Jeffrey Mathews, JA Certified Master Bench Jeweler, is one way to accomplish this goal. Its designed for the following stone-setting procedures:
- Prong setting individual gemstones.
- Prong setting multiple stones in individual settings (such as tennis bracelets and multiple-stone plates or strips).
- Channel setting round, square and baguette gemstones.
- Pavé setting.
- Bezel setting.
- Flush setting.
All stone-setting attachments are provided in the Master Kit, which costs $400, a modest amount considering the time it will save. The AllSet attachment fits onto a standard #30 Foredom handpiece and is designed to be easy to use. Its ideal for one-at-a-time setting jobs in a retail shop environment or for setting multiple gemstones in a production environment. Here are a couple of applications for its use.
Riding the Channel
||The AllSet attachment is easily secured alongside the #30 Foredom handpiece. Jeff uses a standard bur to create the bearing for princess-cut diamonds. The depth of the bearing is adjusted quickly and easily.
||Jeff starts cutting the bearing. The setting height gauge rides along the top of the rings channel wall. The depth of the bearing is controlled by the size of the bearing bur. Tool changeover for different setting procedures takes only seconds. Watch next month for an overview of the milling attachment.
One at a Time
The platform attachment is secured to the handpiece. The depth is adjusted, and Jeff uses a bearing bur to bur one prong at a time. You can use a setting bur to bur all prongs at one time.
