September 2001 Timepieces/Education & Repair AWI Announces New Courses Organization's Chronometer Club seeks new members The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute announced two new continuing education courses scheduled to be held at its headquarters in Harrison, OH, near Cincinnati. The first new course is “Making Your Timepiece, Part 2” scheduled for Aug. 27-31. The second is “Troubleshooting and Finishing Your Timepiece,” scheduled for Sept. 24-28. The instructor will be Laurie Penman, and the fee is $250. AWI also announced a new two-day bench course titled “Recoil Escapement – Solid & Strip Pallet.” The bench course will be presented Sept. 15-16 in Detroit, MI; Oct. 6-7 in Chicago, IL; and Oct. 20-21 in St. Louis, MO. Chronometer Club Separately, AWI’s Chronometer Club, one of its larger affiliate chapters, invites members of the watchmaking profession to join as it expands services. The club provides a technical forum for horologists who service certified chronometer watches. It aims to raise the level of the profession’s craftsmanship and quality standards. The club publishes a technical newsletter, The Communicator, and maintains an Internet forum and personal directories. Dues are $20 annually in the U.S. and Canada.
