White & Gold

Single pearls, large or small, demand attention

White and Golden cultured pearls are perfect for all jewelry wardrobes, and their settings and styles have never been more inventive. Emancipated from staid designs by the popularity of the Tahitian cultured pearl, this jewelry is embraced by conservative and avant garde consumers alike. “Five years ago, all the runways showed white South Sea cultured pearl accessories. Four years ago, it changed to golden pearls,” says Armand Asher, vice president of Albert Asher South Sea Pearl Co., New York City. “But a good saturation of color is hard to find, and expensive. The vast majority of golden pearls tend to be creamy or light yellow.”

Trends for White Pearls

Look for double ropes 30 inches long or more to remain top choices of consumers. Torsades, nesting necklaces, bracelets and chokers are popular also. Pendants are the least expensive way to buy a significant cultured pearl. Necklaces with widely spaced cultured pearls, Y-necklaces, bypass rings and earrings that alternate colors also remain popular. Brooches in all styles are important. Baroque shapes in bracelets and earrings give consumers a unique choice in cultured pearl jewelry.

Trends for Golden Pearls

Golden South Sea cultured pearls used as accents in drop earrings or pendants help keep the price down. Strands of 10mm-12mm cultured pearls under $30,000 are big sellers.
To show the wide variety available, display jewelry by pearl type. This will help the customer understand the difference.
