Five Classic Chain Styles

This is 19th in a series of articles Professional Jeweler is presenting on different styles of jewelry. Learning about different styles, selling points and where they come from can make your job more interesting and profitable

Serpentine

Serpentine chain is produced by hammering curb chain while positioned on its side. Stand a curb chain on its edge lengthwise and you see an “S” pattern that’s accentuated by hammering. This style is available flat or twisted (as shown).

14k twisted serpentine chain is from Metal Marketplace International Inc., Philadelphia, PA; (800) 523-9191 or (215) 592-8777, fax (215) 592-8195.

Cobra

Basic cable chain is hammered into flat, triangular links reminiscent of scales on a cobra’s skin.

14k gold cobra link chain is from Excell Manufacturing Co./Hallmark-Sweet, Attleboro, MA; (800) 225-2706 or (508) 222-9234, fax (508) 222-6531.

Singapore

Singapore chain is produced by lightly swagging a double curb chain, thus flattening an area and creating a luster.

14k Singapore chain is from Stuller, Lafayette, LA; (800) 877-7777, fax (800) 444-4741.

French Rope

Wire is flattened on a machine and turned into links, each one woven into the next – all connected without solder – to create French rope chain.

14k gold French rope is from Excell Manufacturing Co./Hallmark-Sweet, Attleboro, MA; (800) 225-2706 or (508) 222-9234, fax (508) 222-6531.

Filigree

Filigree chain is created by long curb or cable links, the surface of which has a florentine pattern with a lacy look.

14k filigree chain is from Leslie’s, Greenwich, CT; (800) 221-2628 or (203) 869-7071, fax (800) 962-4246 or (203) 869-8696.
