Holiday Scramble

Last-minute ordering makes the holiday season a hectic time of year for everyone. Here are some salable products ready for immediate delivery

It’s been a tough year. The SARS virus. War. Job losses. But as the year winds down, the economy – and our fingers are crossed here – is taking some positive steps toward recovery. As a result, this Christmas you may need that merchandise you passed up ordering during the summer trade shows.

Many jewelry vendors say they’re ready for the last-minute orders you will need to place in the next few weeks. In fact, you can order from some vendors and expect delivery within 48 hours. There are limits to just-in-time ordering, of course. Custom designs and high-design pieces take time to create. But you may choose from a wealth of distinctive stock items that will please your holiday shoppers in December and put a smile on your accountant’s face come January.

Buy strategically too. Keep your eyes open for holiday mailers offering free shipping or discounts on overstocked items. If you’re looking for bargains, surf the Web sites of your favorite vendors.

Here are some other tips to make the ordering process easier on you and the manufacturer:

  • Share information with vendors about what sells throughout the year. “We need to know what’s selling all year to decide what to stock for the holidays,” says Ralph Brenk, managing director of the U.S. division of Breuning, Lawrenceville, GA.
  • Determine what you need as soon as possible. Now is not too soon to review your sales receipts to see what’s been selling this year.
  • When you call to place a last-minute order, have a substitute in mind just in case.
  • Order “no-brainers” that sell any time of year. “Look for clean lines and classic styles such as hoop earrings,” says Peter Tonjes, production manager for Ed Levin Jewelry, Cambridge, NY.
  • Consider non-jewelry gifts that enhance jewelry. “We have a new keepsake collection of enamel jewelry boxes and picture frames that complement the jewelry gift and average about $25,” says Warren Berger, general manager of Dazzlers, Los Angeles, CA.
  • Observe what residents of your community wear. Generally speaking, sales are predicted to be strong this Christmas for religious and personalized items, sentimental styles, hoop and dangle earrings, affordable and reimagined gold jewelry basics, all varieties of diamond jewelry and affordable colored gemstone suites (think citrine, amethyst and blue topaz). “These have been basics for at least five years, so customers are comfortable with them and can afford them,” says Brenk.
