Black and gray Tahitian cultured pearls continue to dominate

Customers will find tahitian cultured pearls more exotic and intriguing than white cultured pearls because of their luster, variety of shades and unique shapes, and prices continue to be good.

“You see such a bold variety of designs with pearls, they no longer have basic or classic styling,” says Denise Wood, designer/owner of Denise Wood Designs Inc., Darien, CT. “The new faceted pearls are clever and fresh. Setting gems directly into the pearls is intriguing and a great way to hide an imperfection. Some designers have stepped outside the traditional use of pearls by mixing them with a variety of gemstones such as tourmaline and tanzanite, using a variety of styles from soft and romantic to more cutting edge.”

In your showcase, try something with color to grab attention. Purple or hot-pink silk orchids draped with black pearls comprise a dramatic scene. Highlight a unique piece of jewelry that will draw attention to the rest of the case or evoke the lure of these pearls’ origins, perhaps by using soft white sand with shells. Most importantly, avoid clutter and stay away from gloomy displays where these darker pearls will get lost.
