Off the Wrist

No need to size the bracelet for these handsome clockers


Whether they’re hanging on a wall, stashed in a pocket or serving as a functional and decorative element in a home, timepieces take a variety of shapes and sizes. Here are a few that can serve dual purposes.

Speidel’s new line of engravable pocket watches was introduced in the fall. Pictured are closed and open views of one of four styles. Each is sold in a gift box with a choice of optional chains ranging from 9-12 inches. The line can be displayed in the same unit that houses Speidel’s new watch line (Professional Jeweler, November 2002, p. 55).

The Wynnewood, Bulova’s new anniversary clock, comes in a walnut case and features an hourly Westminster melody, Roman-numeral dial, filigree hands and visible revolving pendulum. Suggested retail, $150.

The Rittenhouse Clock Co. is a new company creating handcrafted long-case clocks (82 inches tall) using eight-day movements the company makes with modern machine tools in traditional 18th century style. The clocks are modeled after designs by 18th century American clockmaker/ astronomer David Rittenhouse. Each is tested and engraved with a serial number. The case is mahogany with silvered brass and polished steel dial, hands and corner cartouches. Retail price, $6,395. A portion of sales goes to Rittenhouse Town, a National Historic Landmark.

Seiko’s glass-cased table clock, with subdial for seconds, allows a view of the gears in the movement. Suggested retail, $250.

Aero’s full line of pocket watches also includes a variety of decorated pendant watches. This model features red lacquer and 24k goldleaf flowers. The chain is optional. Suggested retail, $375.
