Two Metalsmiths Enjoy Banner Year

Designers Todd Reed and Catherine Hylands have been recognized in five top jewelry competitions this year

When you’re hot, you’re hot. And two designers relatively new to the fine jewelry world, Todd Reed and Catherine Hylands, are both hot. This year, their designs have been recognized by contests and rewarded with spots in the two top jewelry shows in the U.S.

Reed, a Boulder, CO, artist, has studied metalsmithing 12 years. His signature style often features rough diamonds and forged gold, along with other metals such as silver.

He received a NICHE award in February for a circle bracelet. The awards are bestowed on American craft artists by NICHE magazine, a publication of The Rosen Group, which also sponsors the Buyers Market of American Craft. He also won an American Vision Award from the Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America in March for a silver and gold necklace with diamond cubes (“2003 American Vision Awards,” Professional Jeweler, April 2003, pp. 42-43). And last month, he was one of five new designers awarded a Rising Stars booth in the Design Center at the JCK Show-Las Vegas.

Hylands attended the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, CA, worked as a bench jeweler for 13 years in the Bay Area and opened her own studio in 1998. She won a NICHE award in February for a sterling silver and gold hinged and paneled bracelet featuring bezel-set round diamonds. Hylands also was selected as the American Jewelry Design Council’s 2003 New Talent of the Year and her work will be presented in the design area at the JA New York jewelry show this month.
