Professional Jeweler Archive: Off-Round Options

Gemstones/New Products

Cultured pearls that aren't perfectly round are less expensive and often set in innovative designs

They’re colorful, lustrous and affordable. If that sounds like a recipe for success at the sales counter, check out the latest designs featuring off-round cultured pearls. “The difference in price can be huge, and consumers like the savings,” says Dick Hahn, president of Juergens & Anderson, Chicago, IL.

In addition to price, the pearls’ shapes lead to some creative designs, often embracing those shapes. Other popular uses for off-round cultured pearls include 18- and 22-in. strands and add-a-pearl necklaces. “They sell all year long and are guaranteed to bring customers back again and again,” says Hahn.
