Antique-inspired gemstone jewelry maintains modern wearability using contemporary hues

When CHOOSIng designs that hearken back, keep a contemporary edge with color. This season, pink has taken the old-fashioned out of antique creations with tourmaline and pink sapphire. Other gemstones meshing with modern tastes include citrine, peridot, aquamarine and blue and white topaz. “It’s important to know your color by tapping into the fashion market,” says Jude Steele, a partner in Jude Frances, Corona del Mar, CA. “These gemstone colors are seen in clothing and update vintage jewelry.” To keep prices affordable – under $3,000 – less expensive gemstones in larger sizes are often used. “Keeping the price at a certain level is very important,” says Frances Godbois, a partner in Jude Frances. “If the jewelry is priced just right, consumers will buy more.”

The color of the metal depends on the time period evoked – white gold or platinum reflects Edwardian, Art Deco and Art Nouveau styling, while yellow gold is more typical of Georgian or Victorian.
