Fine and fashion jewelry use silver to great effect

Earrings are close to the ear or long, airy drops. Necklaces and bracelets are often found today in two or three layers of fine links. Rings sparkle with diamond melee or have large, chunky colored gems. “There used to be more traditional thoughts on how sterling silver jewelry should be. Now there’s a blending of fine and fashion jewelry,” says John Atencio, designer/owner of Atencio Creations Ltd., Denver, CO. “This is especially evident since diamonds have come on to the scene. Diamonds added to silver have turned this low-price-point metal into high-image jewelry.” Other gems that help keep sterling in high fashion are blue topaz, amethyst and smoky, gray and brown quartz.

John Atencio, designer/owner of Atencio Creations Ltd., Denver, CO, offers selling suggestions for sterling silver jewelry:

The finish line. Consumers want a high-polish finish on their sterling silver. This high-maintenance metal and finish works best with a tarnish retardant. Explain to your customers the different ways to eliminate tarnish. And offer a polishing cloth with each purchase.

Inspiration translation. Know the story behind designer collections so you can tell customers the background and meaning of each piece. For example, the finishes in Atencio Creations are made up of design details such as triangles, lines and circles. “For me, triangles represent the power of the supernatural. The gold circles represent a tight circle of family and friends. And the lines represent the pieces, which hold everything together,” says Atencio.

White wash. White metal is in. Because of its price, sterling silver is becoming more and more popular with every age group. It’s fashionable, priced for a self-purchase and growing more valuable with the trend of adding diamonds.
